Book Review: The Art of Writing English Literature Essays – GCSE by Neil Bowen

Published by Peripeteia Press

There are times when a book lands on your desk and it’s akin to manna from heaven. For those of you who have read my Editor’s Letter on page 3, you will know that the Hopley household, like thousands of others, is in the grip of exam revision. So I left Neil Bowen’s book tactically positioned for my son to chance upon. The next time I looked it had disappeared. After a couple of days, and trying to keep my excitement in check, I asked him if he had found the book useful. “It’s absolutely brilliant,” came his reply. “It covers everything I need to know, is easy to follow and gives loads of excellent tips on how to pick up extra marks.”

And he’s right. Divided into five main sections, each section is completely accessible to the student. Neil uses a variety of methods, many visual, to get his advice across, with the result that by the end of the book a student will completely understand how to successfully plan and write an A grade essay. Neil has also written (with Michael Meally) The Art of Writing English Literature Essays – A Level & Beyond. Buy now! Check out @neilbowen3 for more teaching and revision tips.
