Book Review: Much ado about Shakespeare Written and illustrated by Donovan Bixley

Published by Upstart Press

The subtitle says it all: The life and times of William Shakespeare: a literary picture book. This fun title is beautifully illustrated and shows us Shakespeare as he has never been seen before. Donovan Bixley takes us through Shakespeare’s life, showing us the (possible) inspiration behind some of his most famous lines.

The illustrations are lively and full of action, depicting the fashions and some of the more colourful aspects of life, from bawdy houses to playhouses! As well as the full-colour illustrations, there are sketches of some of the men in his Acting Troupe – led by Richard Burbage – and a commentary on society, drawing upon lines from the plays to capture the exuberance of Shakespeare’s own life and times.

Perfect for both young and old, this biography is enjoyable and an easy read, often tongue in cheek, but hugely informative at the same time.
