Reduced Shakespeare Company tour

Ahead of new UK tour, co-writer and director Adam Long found time to chat with Susan Elkin about the exciting new cast and associated education pack developed for schools.

The Reduced Shakespeare Company (RSC) is back with a six-month, nationwide tour of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) visiting 29 venues from Chipping Norton to Wakefield and from Taunton to Bury St Edmunds. “We’re working with a new young diverse cast and we had over 2000 expressions of interest in auditioning”, says Adam Long, RSC founder, director and co-writer. “I’ve been working in children’s television and am bowled over by the number of bright young people, say aged 18 to 30, that are out there.”

The original version broke records by running at London’s Criterion Theatre for nine years and playing in twenty other countries. “We’ve reworked it now and, although it still includes all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays, it will feel improvisatory and spontaneous” says Adam, adding that it will in fact vary slightly from night to night. “As before it will be three actors on stage. Kiran Raywilliams is learning all the parts and will rotate roles.” Rehearsals start at the end of January and the first performance will be at The Theatre Chipping Norton on 18 February.
