“Change My Story” is the Royal Shakespeare Company’s (RSC) flagship education programme accompanying the UK and Ireland tour of Matilda the Musical. Inspired by the musical’s themes of empowerment and literacy, the initiative aims to reach thousands of young people in cities hosting the touring production
Roald Dahl’s delightful, subversive novel Matilda champions reading and writing. The RSC’s musical (remember that all-books set?), written by Dennis Kelly with music by Tim Minchin, takes it a stage further. And now, along with a big thirteen-venue nationwide tour, there’s a new learning programme called Change My Story which is working with a hundred schools.
Participating schools, from Edinburgh to Plymouth and from Cardiff to Norwich, are all under-served by arts and culture and/or have above the national average of students eligible for Free School Meals. Over 5000 children and young people are involved along with 450 teachers.
“It’s a partly a writing challenge” explains Georgina White, RSC’s Head of National Partnerships. “Dennis Kelly invites students to write a missing scene. Everything and anything is possible. It’s wide open”.
